In the beginning Sanditon looked to be the perfect place to spend the summer.  There was the sea, and healthy sea bathing, and walks upon the cliffs.  There was the promise of entertainments: a cricket match, a regatta and the Midsummer ball.

But the workforce was overworked and paid late, and corners were cut.  A man was seriously injured, and the promised amenities were delayed.  And then there was another accident, a disastrous fire, and with no insurance no possibility to rebuild.

What had appeared in the beginning to be a silk purse, turned out to be a sow’s ear.
