“You are under no obligation to do anything,” Mouselet said firmly.

“But, but, but, it’s a birthday,” the Ferret spluttered.  “I always do something for people’s birthdays.”

“It’s not anyone you know,” Aemelia Vole said hurriedly.

The Ferret looked very hurt.  “Not even a small song?” he asked sorrowfully.

“I suppose something small would be okay,” Mouselet said.  “Why don’t you go and practice something elsewhere and then you can show us when you’re ready?”

The Ferret, instantly recovered, bounced out.

Aemelia raised her eyebrows.

“And if we’re quick,” Mouselet added, “We can get ourselves sorted before he gets back.”
