Patrick Turner listened to the coastguard with mounting dismay.  There was no way they could get a boat to the lighthouse in the current stormy weather, and he knew his patient couldn’t wait until the following day for her operation.  It would be up to him to remove her appendix before it burst.  Yes, he’d done such surgery before, in Italy, in the war, but that brought back memories he couldn’t afford to entertain at the moment.

Fortunately, Fred was there, and understood without needing any explanation.  He was with friends who would give him the confidence he currently lacked.
