This is a place of dreams. They take the inchoate desires of the client; he thinks he wants to sell but what he wants is acceptance and appreciation. Then they make the customer see a better life, an enchanted existence within their grasp.
These conduit people, these advertisers, they, too, want something more in their lives. Things they imagine could happen but bafflingly, never do.
Draper could be a good husband; Joan will one day be listened to; Campbell will be looked up to, be the leader he is.
Madison Avenue sells dreams, but not every secret wish comes true.
