“Anais,” he hissed, moving her further into the space between the fallen pillar and the wall, trying to keep her hidden. “You must be silent!” She couldn’t stop weeping. He understood, but it wasn’t the time. She could cry later when they were safe. “They’ll hear and I’m running low on bolts!”
Her fragile body curled into a ball, but her shoulders still shook. “That mage…” He swallowed at her trembling voice. “He’ll come for me again! He’ll kill me!”
“No, he won’t. I won’t let him.”
“He got away!”
“I will protect you.”
“He-!”
“Anais,” he pleaded. “I promise.”
