The letter blazed under the candle, the flame that consumed it bright and hot, and Roche said nothing as he watched it. He purposely didn’t either as he pressed his index against his mouth, hiding his lips, and he turned the paper over as the flame nearly licked his fingers.
When the heat threatened to blister his skin and burn his nails, he dropped the letter onto his desk, letting it fall into ash as the flame slowly snuffed itself out.
“Tell that envoy,” he hissed. “He can go plough himself.”
Roche only nodded, unaware yet obedient.
Gods damn Maria.
