“Of course poor Flight Lieutenant Murtagh kept his wife a secret,” Miss Marple told the inspector.  “He knew his family wouldn’t approve; her social status hardly matched theirs.  And there wasn’t time to inform them about the wedding.”

The inspector looked at Miss Marple blankly.

“The baby was born three months later,” she pointed out.  “I don’t doubt he intended on telling them, only his plane was shot down.”

“So when his younger brother arranged for their father to have a fatal accident he expected to inherit the title,” the inspector said.  “But instead it goes to his young nephew.”
