“There’s a Captain Basil standing outside the front door,” Bessie, our new maid, told me.  “He asked if you would go down to see him.”

“Oh,” I said, looking up from my newspaper, “No, I don’t think so.  Tell him we have no need of a harpoonist.”

“What?”  The poor girl looked rather confused.

“And you might tell him to remember what happened when Father McGinty called last week.”

“Yes, Doctor.”  Bessie curtseyed and left.

I heard her telling Mrs Hudson on her way back down. 

“Don’t worry, dear.  It’s only Mr Holmes being silly again.  You can ignore him!”
