Peter Pan’s words came to mind as I followed the action through my binoculars.  I had had plenty of adventures in the past, the best of them with Holmes and many, but not all, of which I had recorded so others could enjoy them too.  Those were adventures that a man could be proud of.

But watching our soldiers emerge from their trenches to be mown down in their hundreds was not an adventure, it was wholesale slaughter.  I returned to the field hospital and started to make preparations for when the first of the casualties would be brought in.
