Carefully, Adam lifted the diamond out of the box where it was lying.

“They say it’s cursed,” Lucas said.  “And that no good comes to anyone who handles it.  That’s why it’s always kept in a box.”

“Don’t be ridiculous,” Adam snapped.  He held the diamond up to the light and admired the way it sparkled.  “That’s a tale put about to prevent it from being stolen.”

Lucas looked stunned at Adam’s sudden show of temper.  “All the same I’d rather you left it in its box.”

Reluctantly Adam replaced it and closed the lid.  He nodded.  “Maybe you’re right.”
