Two elderly gentlemen stood together, their heads bowed, as the bugler played the last post. Then, as the ceremony finished, they walked slowly away.
“One wonders if our leaders will ever learn,” John Watson said to Sherlock Holmes. “So many years since I expressed my belief that war was a dreadful way to solve a dispute, and yet we seem to be no further forward in that respect.”
“And at the cost of so many lives lost and maimed,” Holmes agreed. “There cannot be a village that has not been affected by the carnage, or a family untouched by tragedy.”
