“Tis a sign,” Mary said.

“What’s a sign?” Pat asked, joining her in looking out of the window.

“Tis a sign of bad times.”

“No, I still don’t follow you.”

“There be broken eggs in the drive.  Tis a sign the hens can’t properly lay.”

The Captain came over as well.  “I’ve just seen Mike wheeling a bicycle round the side of the house, and limping.  I think those broken eggs are more a sign that he fell off the bike.”

“I tried to tell him his chain was loose,” Pat said.

“I said ‘twas a sign of bad times.”
