“It looks like he’s tried to delete whatever was written underneath,” Inspector Fox said.  “It’s no good, all I can make out is green ink.”

“I wonder,” Alleyn said.  “Ask Chapman if he can come in here.” 

When the detective constable came in, Alleyn passed him the message and asked him to read it.  Much surprised, the constable did, while the other two stared at him.

“Thank you, Chapman,” Alleyn said.  “Morris had tried to cover the message with green ink.”

“Sorry, sir.  I couldn’t see it at all.”

“Which was fortunate for us, since we now know his plans.”
