“You know, Dolly, I do think you can keep love happening overnight within your favourite Mills and Boon novels,” Miss Marple said.

Dolly Bantry looked disappointed, but brightened when her friend added, “The reverse, of course, isn’t the case: a sudden revelation, one simple action or the wrong word, are all sufficient, that within one night the blinkers of love fall off, and the murderous thought takes their place.  The outworking may take months, or even years, but once the corner is turned there is no going back.”

“You’re thinking of Paul Jamieson,” Dolly said.

Jane Marple sighed and nodded.
