“So these two distinct sets of fish skin clenched the case, sir, did they not?”
“They did indeed, Br’er Fox,” replied Alleyn as he finished his report. “And I much prefer to focus on the scientific aspects of this affair,” he continued, adding gloomily, “the social ones are too depressing.”
“Scales of justice?” suggested Fox.
Alleyn chuckled. “I think the only champion of the mess was that cat. At least it got a decent dinner out of it.”
“Speaking of which, sir…”
“Yes, Fox,” Alleyn set a file aside and stood, “let’s call it a day.”
“Fish and chips, sir?”
