Well, they were versions of legends, perhaps not quite accurate to the heroes who'd inspired the einherjar the Shepherds kept acquiring...
Chrom knew that as well.
And he cared for every one of them, and was grateful for their aid. He--

Chrom nodded after a beat and let Eldgian pour more of the terrible wine that was the best they could afford while on the march.
He could see Eldigan's surprisingly-fangy teeth in the firelight and couldn't help but wonder...
There must be some truth there, right?
