“Holmes, I realise as I get older my memory is not as good as it once was.  There are, of course, certain events that I will always remember, both the good, such as the day I met my beloved Mary, and the bad, like your death at Reichenbach.  And there are things I no longer remember, which is why I failed to post the letter in my pocket when I went to the village this morning.  However, one thing I do most certainly remember is that we do not own a cat.  So, why is one asleep in my chair?”

Such a lovely and poignant buildup to the "punchline" and very Watson. Though I think my favorite part is re-reading it while imaging Holmes sitting there the whole time thinking, I know you're going to ask about the cat, Watson, will you please just ask about the cat! XD

Haha, thank you. Watson feels Holmes is responsible for the cat in some way and therefore is deliberately annoying him, knowing Holmes' thoughts.
