One step closer, two steps back; maybe it was the wind chill, the ice breeze, the fine hairs of his neck standing on end -- but something urged him to leave. Sakon felt a gaze burning into him, an animal's instinct, but saw nothing. It bore primitive - unearthly.
His breath fogged the air as he stepped near the curb. He felt a small shock of cold seep through his shoes and up his legs, into his stomach and chest. His ears were filled with the roar of tires on asphalt; it silenced the crunch of his shoes in the winter snow.
