Kaine stared down at the faded slip of paper that she'd taken from the slightly damp envelope. There had been many attempts at letters but only one had contained vaguely legible words.
THANK YOU.
"The hell do Shades know about gratitude," she muttered to herself, "Stupid fucking thing. Pretending to be human. Who's it trying to fool, us or itself? Ought to rip this up and throw it in the damn sea."
"What're you whispering about, Kaine?" Emil piped up. He was watching the crabs scuttling around his feet.
"Nothing," she sighed, walking off, "Just a letter I gotta deliver."
