As I moved from bed to bed that night in the semi-darkness, I could hear the padre speaking quietly and confidently of heaven to those of my patients he had been called to see.  I was no longer sure that I believed in heaven, though I did not begrudge the poor unfortunates lying in the beds whatever comfort he was able to provide.  Indeed, I sometimes wondered how much the padre himself believed any more given our circumstances.  One thing was for sure, none of us needed to be told about hell, for that was where we were currently living.
