A smile— a pure thing. Athanasia embodies what nobles don't in her smiles of goodness, light, and joy. She's doesn't attempt ascension, she doesn't barter for his attention; she merely laughs and giggles and indulges herself in her third slice of cake, elated to be around Daddy.
Her gaze meets Claude's across the table, but rather than the villainous, conniving calculations, she looks to him with childish happiness, as if he's fathered her all along, as if she hadn't survived the desolation and squalor of the Ruby Palace.
Claude chuckles, swallowing too-sweet cake.
