“Dr Watson, come quickly,” Bessie said, bursting into our rooms.  “Mrs Hudson’s knocked someone out who claimed to be Mr Holmes, but she said he wasn’t.”

I hurried downstairs to find a man dressed in sailor’s oilskins who was moaning and saying, “What hit me?”

“I did,” Mrs Hudson replied.  “And I’ll hit you again if you don’t lie still.”

“He certainly does bear a strong physical resemblance to Holmes,” I said.  “How did you know he wasn’t?”

“He was much too polite and apologetic,” Mrs Hudson said.  “Have you ever known Mr Holmes wipe his feet on the doormat?”
