Time was running out.
As he struggled to reload the gun, he blundered. Shit. The heavy rain was making the bullets slippery. Or was it only sweat? Or both?
Far away, but still too near, he heard a low, bass-heavy rumble. A steady sloshing sound was heading in his direction. Tentacles working through puddles, the splash-sploosh-splurt drawing ever nearer.
His heart pounded. It might burst, from the terror he was feeling. And the odds were good that the bullets wouldn't even help.
He had to try. Come Hell or high water. That thing had to be stopped.
