“I had hoped it wouldn’t be the brother,” Dolly Bantry said sadly.  “I suppose it was rather a forlorn hope.”

“Yes,” Jane Marple agreed.  “I’m afraid all the signs were there.  He had repeatedly promised he wouldn’t do it again, and yet every time he did the same thing.”

Dolly sighed.  “Yes, it’s rather like hoping the weather will dry up so you can have your planned picnic after all.  The sky remains grey, the rain bashes on the window, and the weather forecast promises more of the same and still one small part of your mind continues to hope."
