The lorgnette looked like it belonged to a bygone, more decadent time. Carol grinned, admiring its ornate style.
She lifted it to her eyes, peering through the lenses. Then, she gasped, and it nearly fell from her grip. Hesitant, her heart throbbing, she looked through again.
In what ought to have been a relatively empty antique shop, she could see shadowy masses, each more menacing than anything she'd ever seen without it.
Shuddering, Carol put the lorgnette back on the shelf, easing out of the shop.
The proprietor sighed sorrowfully. "I'll never be rid of that accursed thing," he muttered.
