I spied Watson through the back window. He stood by the compost pile, leaning on a rake, head slightly bowed, brow furrowed in profound contemplation.

What was he thinking of?

Compost. Decay. Ashes to ashes.

Admittedly, he and I were in the autumn of life, but we were hale and hearty, and spring was right around the corner!

The desire to assuage any gloomy considerations warred with the desire to respect my companion’s privacy.

I opened the window and called,

“Watson, what’re you thinking of?”

He smiled. “The shilling I lost in the eggs shells. Come help me find it.”
