“…but, sir, if we had two independent witnesses…”
“Two independent witnesses,” echoed Detective Inspector Sloane. “Tricky thing, independent witnesses. In all my years of policing in Calleshire, I don’t know that I’ve ever met two independent witnesses, so I wouldn’t hold out for a pair on this case.”
“But if we had them, sir,” pressed Detective Sargent Crosby.
“If we had them, it would make all the difference, Crosby.”
Crosby lifted his eyes.
Sloane followed his gaze and spotted the owls in the bough.
“Ah,” said Sloane quietly. “Yes, those are two independent witnesses, but they’re not talking.”
“Wise birds.”
