The Punch and Judy show in the town square provided a sufficient draw that many of the townsfolk came to watch it.  It also provided the ideal cover for a pickpocket to work his way through the crowd, presumably relieving them of small change and other items which could be swiftly disposed of.  Although in fact this was a pickpocket with a very specific article in mind.  Sherlock Holmes removed a door key from the pocket of a draper and hurried to his shop to gain entry through the back door, returning before the performance ended to replace the key.

Sneaky thief, Sherlock Holmes! I watched a video about a pickpocket reacting to pickpocketing in films and it was entertaining (like the one about art heists but a different 'expert').
