Stupid with surprise and pain, Izzy flails helplessly as his assailant forces something between his lips. Coppery blood on his tongue shocks him into ignoring the buzzing in his ears to focus on what he is being commanded to do. And so he whimpers, bites down. Feels the bone of his severed toe snap between his teeth, swallows. Retches at the gamey taste of his own flesh, but he will not bring it back up, because the Captain—the Captain, not “Ed”—has given him an order. The Captain is back, and it is Izzy’s privilege and honor to obey.
