“But what if the girl isn’t a liar?” murmured Miss Marple, as if to herself. “What if it’s the clock that’s lying?”
Dolly heard her friend. “Ah, you mean shades of the vicarage.”
“Yes,” said Miss Marple. “The same principle but used to a slightly different effect: to discredit the maid’s account.”
Dolly looked about herself and tsked. “I’ve been in the garden. No watch.”
Miss Marple hummed suggestively.
Dolly raised her eyebrows.
“Well, that nice Inspector Slack has just arrived. I was wondering if he might tell us the time.”
Dolly barked a laugh. “Unhappily, but yes, let’s ask.”
