Dark fell with soft kitten paws, step by step, through the trees and across the clearing. Right up to the porch and then up over the walls, over the roof, and right on past, farther up the mountain and over the peak.
At last the whole world, as far as could be seen, was shrouded in shadow and spangled with stars.
Side-by-side, they sat on the porch, passing a clay jar of wine back and forth between them.
Until all was still. Until the song of insects began and the stars gathered to watch that first sweet kiss.
