“You only have one guide in life, A-Cheng,” his mother said, smoothing her pale hand over his hair.
Mama was being soft. She wasn’t scolding or scowling. She held him close, petting him with small smile on her beautiful face.
So he knew something was wrong.
“I won’t be there with you, but Zidian will.”
He gasped as Mama’s ring transferred to him, becoming small enough to fit on his tiny finger. Mama put him in the boat but didn’t get in.
“Listen to your heart, my little Lotus. And be brave.”
“Mama?” He was scared.
“Run, A-Cheng.”
