A-Cheng’s boat came to shore far from home. Here, trees grew tall from the water, with great gaps beneath their roots where eyes shone against Zidian's warning sparks.
He whimpered, before he remembered Mama’d said to be brave. A-Cheng wiped away tears and bravely stepped off the boat. Immediately, he lost his footing, collapsing into a mud puddle.
His clothes were ruined. He began to cry.
“Boy. What is wrong?”
A-Cheng looked up. His laolao!
He lifted his hands, asking to be picked up. The old woman did so, heedless of his muddy clothes.
"Mama needs help," A-Cheng cried. "Please!"
