Sneaking out to the back porch, she flicks her lighter, watching the red flame dance before she touches it to the tip of her cigarette. She’d told her Grams she quit smoking weeks before, but she needs something to stop the shakes.

When the memories come, they’re bad enough to almost make her lose her mind.

She stays outside puffing away until dawn, and then collapses for half an hour before she’s dragged, kicking and screaming, from bed into another chaotic day in this Podunk town.
