“Hullo?” Miss Marple’s voice quavered into the telephone.
“Jane!”
“Dolly?”
“I’m calling from the box in Market Basing. I just heard the story of you defeating the conniving Mrs. Trout.”
Miss Marple smiled despite herself. “Oh, yes?” she purred.
“Don’t try that sweet old lady tone on me. I know you’re ruthless. Wicked Mrs. Trout! Imagine collecting pension funds of three old ladies long gone to the great garden show in the sky.”
“It was last week, Dolly.”
“It’s a nine days’ wonder, Jane. They’re still talking about. Fancy a partridge for supper? My treat. Or perhaps…”
“Anything but trout!”
