They say that doctors are the worst patients, but I would contend that honour belongs to detectives. Just this week I have insisted one consulting detective remain in bed to give his battered body a chance to properly rest, ordered an inspector to my room to lie down to stop putting pressure on his cracked ribs (in the end, it was only the threat of asking Mrs Hudson to help him undress that achieved this), and forced another inspector, old enough to know better, to elevate a damaged ankle and not go charging off again. I deserve a large whisky!
