Once more, despite my protestations, I had been asked, or rather expected, to act as a judge for the village show. Fortunately, two of my classes caused me no difficulty, but the third provided a dilemma. Could I award first prize for the drawing of a flower to Lizzie Hopkins (it was clearly her work) when we were known as being family friends? I was reassured, however, when the vicar wandered over and said, ‘There’s no doubt which will be the winner in that class.’ Mrs Old confirmed this by saying there’d be a general outcry if she didn’t win.
