The first night, Wen Ning lies down to sleep out of habit. Then he realizes his foolishness: he’s a corpse, he doesn’t need to sleep. He can’t sleep, even if he wanted to. No need to eat or drink; he can sense the plentiful resentful energy around him. He won’t stammer, his hands won’t shake from nervousness when he shoots—no, his fingers are too stiff. He won’t be able to draw the bow again. Weapons won’t hurt him; the wounds that killed him are black and unbleeding.
Wen Ning remembers his sister’s grateful tears and waits obediently for sunrise.
