It is raining in Yushi. Yushi’s queen stands under the raindrops, her face turned upward and her feet planted in the wet dirt.
Rain can wash away so much: the scars left by marching soldiers and the hooves of battle-steeds, the roads they carved to make the straightest route to the kingdom’s capital, now worn away and hidden under the growing crops. The sharp edge of a blade; the pride of a conquering general.
Beside her, Black Ox snorts and shakes rain off his head. She rests her hand on his shoulder. The rain falls, and everything rises in green.
