It was perhaps a not entirely satisfactory close to our latest case, but in the circumstances, we could have expected little more. Holmes’ client had, somewhat reluctantly I admit, paid his fee, and been forced to accept what Holmes had told him, but I doubt he will consult us again.
However, as Holmes said, when the necklace appeared to be such a bargain, the client really should have asked himself why. Although I doubt being told that, since the diamonds in the necklace were indeed fake, he could not be charged with receiving stolen goods, improved his mood at all.
