You can't bargain with time. Not when your chance is already long gone.
He's tried it, making Odio take him back in time. He was a horse again, still couldn't do anything except run. He tried pulling himself out of there altogether. A different horse escaped with the same ghosts clinging to it. There was one more unexplained disappearing horse, miles away from the battle, along with their missing Gatling gun.
He just asked Odio to take him back, with a promise to shut up and do his damn job.
Bastard was probably only agreeing to make a point, anyway.
