“Found the body?” snapped Chief Inspector Leeyes.
“Yes,” said Sloan wearily.
“About time. How’d you find it?”
“Truthfully, because of the milk maids.”
“Maids a-milking, hmm? Were there eight?”
“No, just two. Little Tommy went along and tried to emulate them.”
“He what?!”
“He tried to copy them and milk a cat.”
Leeyes grunted.
“That went over as you might expect,” continued Sloane. “The cat bolted, upsetting the cows and the maids. In the resulting chaos, Jones’ body was uncovered in the hay.”
“Are you going to need maids, cats, and cows to find out who killed him?”
“No, sir.”
