Watson set the toy on the table beside his bed. He could still remember the face of the wandering peddler who’d sold it to him that Christmas, the Christmas after Mary and Holmes were gone and before Holmes had returned. The nomad had seemed as solitary as Watson himself, nevertheless he conjured a son or a nephew for Watson and pressed him to buy. To Watson’s own astonishment, he had made a purchase, an automaton circus bear who danced and performed acrobatics.

The toy had tickled Watson, and over the years, it had kept him from despair more than once.
