Winternight as observed at the Amalo Chapterhouse was hardly what a typical person would call festive. The Vigilant Brotherhood would have made an unlikely sponsor for a ball even had it admitted women to its ranks. Its members were distrustful of anything that hinted at a breakdown of social order; after all, it wasn’t the Acrobats' Guild who’d be called in when someone's servants refused to act their station the next morning. So while no one thanked Supraeceptor Azhanharad for treating the Chapterhouse to an urn of the River-Cat’s Serenity’s Birthday Blend, he heard the gratitude beneath their silence nonetheless.
