Notes: Watson explains how he knows he's dreaming.
It seemed unlikely that someone who could determine a person’s occupation and recent whereabouts from naught but a sliver of cuff and a tip of a book would be unaware of the inner workings of his own mind even while at rest.
“Can’t you tell when you’re dreaming?” I asked Holmes when our winter’s evening conversation had wandered far and wide.
“Sometimes. Can you?”
“Usually. I am an excellent dancer in my dreams. I simply glide, scarcely touching earth.”
Holmes smiled and took up his violin and began to compose what he would later call, informally, “The Dreaming Doctor’s Waltz.”
