If looks could’ve slapped a Detective Constable, that issued by Detective Inspector C. D. Sloan would’ve done it. Crosby was inapt on the best of days, but on the worst, like today, he was almost insupportable.
Sloan shifted his attention from Crosby’s tactless comment to more important matters, namely, the monogrammed trunk in which the dismembered body of Mrs. Layla Masterson, nee Matthews had been discovered and Sloan couldn’t help but wonder if this case would attest to the old adage that most murderers were widowers.
