"What made you suspect it was that particular superintendent who was corrupt?” John Watson asked.  They were sitting in the pub, celebrating the successful conclusion of a case.

“Sherlock had been onto him for a while,” Stanley Hopkins replied.  “But it seemed so implausible.”

“So what changed your mind?”

Greg Lestrade laughed.  “He made Stanley an offer he thought he wouldn’t refuse.  Said he’d support his promotion if he turned a blind eye during the operation when they abseiled down the outside of the old warehouse.”

John joined in with the general laughter.  “Clearly he didn’t know Stanley very well.”
