Notes: At a Sussex church bazaar, Watson admires some glass jars.
“These glass jars are handsome, don’t you think, Holmes?”
I had no opinion on the jars, but I did think it foolish to express appreciation within earshot of a sharp-witted seller at a church bazaar. Watson had just greatly weakened our bargaining position.
“They would do nicely to store my seashell collection,” continued Watson.
My eyebrows rose. That morning, Watson and I had rowed after I’d sat upon, and destroyed, a quartet of his latest finds. His treasures were threatening to overrun our little Sussex bungalow.
“Indubitably,” I replied, then made the smiling church lady an offer she couldn’t refuse.
