The wedding of Lord Humphrey was an occasion Hugh Bradecote would have been only too happy to miss, but the sheriff was most insistent that if he was going to sit and suffer through the inevitable speeches then his under-sheriff could do the same. 

They had just begun the meal when a servant approached and said quietly to the sheriff, “My Lord, there is a man outside, who says his name is Catchpoll, and he needs to speak to someone urgently.”

William de Beauchamp looked at Bradecote and said, “You’d better go, although I half suspect you arranged this beforehand.”
