Title: Loyalty
Author: Zdenka
Fandom: Don Carlo (Verdi opera)
Rating: T
Characters: Philip II; Philip & Rodrigo, Philip & Carlos
Challenge: Amnesty Week XXXV / #027 - rebel
Notes/Warnings: Philip's mind can be kind of a dark place.
Summary: After the confrontation at the auto-da-fé, Philip considers his son and Posa.
Bad enough that Carlos brought the ambassadors of rebellious Flanders before Philip, giving support to heretics and causing a public scene; when his rash demands were refused, he dared to draw his sword on his father—his king!
And no one stepped forward to defend Philip. Not one of his guards—his grandees—the lords he had rewarded and advanced. None but the Marquis of Posa.
Surely, this man was a treasure beyond price. Philip had not arranged it as a test of loyalty, but he could not have devised a better one. And Posa chose him before his son.
